IMG_1651Saint Viator High School continues to move up the ranks of the math world. For the fourth straight year, the entire math team qualified for the state championship, hosted by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and they brought home some heavy metal.

The championship took place last weekend, in historic Altgeld Hall, home of the mathematics department, on the campus of the University of Illinois at Champaign.

For starters, the team placed 8th overall—two places higher than last year—in its division of 53 high school teams.

“I am so proud of our team, and of all the hard work they put in all year,” said Mrs. Cheryl Nowak, who moderated the math team with Mrs. Bridgette Brankin and Fr. Arnold Perham, CSV.

Driving their success was a pair 1-2 finishes. The Frosh/Soph team of Eric Ryu ‘20 and Angel Cheng ’21 finished first place in their division, beating out 21 other teams. In this intense, time-sensitive competition, they had less than three minutes per question to answer a series of 10 problems correctly.

“It is one of the most challenging events in the competition,” Mrs. Nowak says.

The two captains of the team, Thomas Stanila ’18, and Marcus Lannie ’19 placed second in the oral competition, continuing Saint Viator’s strong showing in that event. They worked with Fr. Perham all year to prepare for this challenging competition, where they must work out problems orally.

IMG_1652“It was the most exhilarating and euphoric competition in which I have ever competed,” says Marcus, who adds that he and Thomas literally finished each other’s sentences in the extemporaneous portion, where they had to complete difficult problems on the spot.

“It’s unbelievably hard,” Fr. Perham says. ‘This is a real accomplishment for these young men.”

Not to be outdone, Saint Viator’s Algebra 2 Team placed third at state, out of 33 teams. Congratulations to juniors Hanger Wang, Amy Gao, Marcus Lannie, Sumin Yu, Ella Shi and Kito Guo.

“Mrs. Brankin and I enjoyed working with these mathletes all year and we are looking forward to next year,” Mrs. Nowak added. “We have a lot of strong underclassmen coming up the ranks and we are excited about carrying the momentum into next year.”
